What is a Gecko?

Someone once asked me a simple question that I did not know the answer too. What is a gecko? So I asked around. To my surprise, I had an extremely difficult time getting a proper answer. But in taxonomy, their will be generally many differences in both the physical and anatomical characteristics that separates the species. An sometimes their may only be a few. This is one of the main reasons why it is very difficult and their is much controversy in taxonomy.

While I go through many lengths to verify info on this site, please note it is extremely difficult to get proper answers in certain area's of discussion. This happens to be just one of them. We have not been able to verify to accuracy of the following information, but choose to release it in attempts to both verify it and to help discover more information on to it. If you would like to comment or offer any suggestion for this section, please contact us at taxonomy@geckonetwork.com.

From our understanding, geckos are characterized by the following:

  • have pleurodont teeth on the lower jaw.

  • posses 1-3 sternal ribs.

  • usually have amphicoelous vertebrae.

  • posses skulls that lack temporal and postorbital arches.

  • lack palatal teeth.

  • usually posses cloacal bones.

  • usually have fixed clutch sizes (of one or two eggs/clutch).
